He graduated from UAB. Ray invited Jesus into his life to become his Savior at the age of 27 and was forever changed. He loved to tell the story of God’s redeeming grace to all who would listen.
He worked as a Manager for the Social Security Southeastern Program Center for 36 years and was a witness to God’s goodness in his daily service at the SSA. Ray attended several churches in the Birmingham area over the years and leaves great friends at each one…Shades Mountain Independent Church, Christ Charismatic Episcopal Church, Mt. Signal Church and Liberty Church. He had a servant heart and loved to study God’s word and teach others.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Howard Raughton Baker and Sylvia McCord Baker; his brother-in-law, Edmund P. Blackwell; his brother-in-law, Bob Kendall, and his niece, Laura Lee Blackwell Fulton.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Martha Mayo Baker; his son, John Christopher Baker (Shelley); grandchildren: Ethan Andrew Willis (13), Logan David Wood (9), McKenzie Grace Baker (7) and Caleb Matthew Baker (2); his sisters, Lynda Baker Blackwell and Beverly Baker Kendall; his brother, Charles Baker (Andrea); numerous and much-loved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and Martha’s entire family. He was loved by all and will be sorely missed.
A short graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 10:00 am at Southern Heritage Funeral Home (475 Cahaba Valley Road, Pelham, AL 35124). Visitation with the family will be held at 11:00 am at Liberty Church (2732 Old Rocky Ridge Road, Birmingham, AL 35216) followed by a Celebration of Life Service at Noon with Rev. Bruce Terry officiating.
