She was born on October 9, 1938 the daughter of Lee Ambrose Johnson, Sr. and Christine Nabors Johnson in Okolona, Mississippi. She accepted Christ at an early age. Esther relocated with her family to Kalamazoo, Michigan where she attended Kalamazoo Public Schools. After high school, she was employed in many capacities which included a Nurse’s Aide, and she worked at Beach Products and Brown Company. She was also employed at Western Michigan University as Head Cook for many years until her retirement. Esther enjoyed being around people so she came out of retirement to volunteer at Senior Services where she assisted other seniors for many years in transportation, etc.

Esther united in marriage to George Buchanan on April 10, 1953 and to this union 5 children were born.

Esther was a faithful member of Galilee Baptist Church where she served as a Missionary and as a member of the Senior Usher Board.

Esther was very family oriented and would bring everyone together often by hosting many family gatherings at her home. She was a “social butterfly” who was known for her outgoing, friendly personality which made her a joy to be around.
