Harry Don was the second of three children born to parents Don Alzaro and Sophia R Charter Skellenger of Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Shortly after Harry Don's birth, the family removed to California, where they were noted living in Mendocino, Sonoma Co, in 1880. About 1901, Harry Don married Sophia C Breitzman, daughter of Robert J and Annie Breitzman of San Francisco, CA. Two sons were born to Harry and Sophia during their short marriage; Donald H and Robert Juan Skellenger. Harry Don and Sophia's marriage ended prior to 1908, as on 20 May 1908 he married Mary Belle Harris, daughter of Eli and Bell Harris of Oakville, Napa Co, CA. Twin sons were born to Harry Don and Mary Bell on 18 Dec 1909 in Napa, CA; Henry G Skellenger and William A "Ollie" Skellenger. Harry Don was a veteran of the Spanish-American War serving in the Philippine Islands with Co B, 1st Regt, California Volunteer Infantry during the period 27 Apr 1898 to 21 Sep 1899. Harry Don and Mary Bell divorced before 1930 and he spent the remainder of his life farming/ranching in Napa Co until his death at the Veteran's Home of California Hospital, at Yountville. He is buried in the Veterans Home Memorial Grove Cemetery along with his father Don Alzaro Skellenger, a Civil War veteran.
Harry Don and Don Alzaro Skellenger are, respectively, the 8th and 7th generation descendants of Jacobus Schellinger (1625-1693) of Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Nederland; Jacobus is generally recognized as the Dutch immigrant who first brought his surname to the New World circa 1650.
