A private family Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Effingham. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Effingham. Arrangements are in the care of Johnson Funeral Home in Effingham.

Charles “Charlie”, the son of Charles A. and Stella (Koester) Hicks, was born on April 1, 1941. He graduated from St. Anthony High School with the class of 1959. He then attended Eastern Illinois University and Millikin University.
On August 25, 1962, Charlie married the love of his life, Susan W. Uptmor and started a beautiful family. He then began his accounting career, working for Mutual of Omaha, then later worked for Wabash Independent Oil Company and World Color Press. After retiring he began his favorite job of being a caregiver for his three granddaughters. Along with this, Charlie was active with United Way, the St. Anthony Church Picnic, and Knights of Columbus. He loved golfing, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He had a passion for cooking and was an expert on the grill. He will forever be known for his delicious ribs and love for peanut butter.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Susan, of 58 years; two sons, Christopher (wife, Karlene) of Kaunakakai, Hawaii and Boulder, Colorado, and Chad (wife, LaShunda) of Conyers, Georgia; daughter, Jeni Phillips (husband, Glen) of Effingham; brother, Jerry (wife, Jackie) Hicks of Lemont; sister, Mary LaKemper (husband, Gary) of Clermont, FL; grandson, Calvin Hicks (wife, Mariam) of Portland, Oregon; granddaughters, Sophia Hicks of Boulder, Colorado, and Shayna, Kaylee, and Krista Phillips of Effingham; brother-in-law, Tom Uptmor (wife, Chrystal) Effingham, Illinois, and sister-in-law, Ellen Bowers (husband, Dave) of Dallas, Texas.
Charlie is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Stella Hicks; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Dorothy Uptmor; step-father-in-law, Jack Williams; and grandson Dustin Hicks.
