Firefighters found Peggy Harding in her bedroom at the Cypress House apartment complex at 24955 Cypress Ave. shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday, authorities said.
The fire began in a wall outlet that had been modified with a four-outlet conversion, said fire Capt. LaShon Earnest. The outlet overheated, causing a pillow to catch fire, he said.
Harding's husband, Randy Harding, tried to move the pillow but burned his hand and dropped it, Earnest said. He was able to escape the fire after a neighbor heard smoke alarms and helped him out, Earnest said.
Peggy Harding had been bedridden since 1999 because of a stroke, Earnest said. The Alameda County coroner will conduct an autopsy to determine how she died.."
