She was born in Blanco, Texas, but grew up in Clute, Texas where as a teenager, she won the Miss Clute contest, which she was very proud of. She married Charles B. "CB" Wolf on May 19, 1956 in Brazoria, Texas. They lived in California for a number of years, where she worked for the Los Angeles school district. Her husband was a bus driver for the city. The couple eventually returned to Blanco, Texas where Joy worked in the cafeteria at the Blanco Elementary School for many years.

For the last year or so of her life, she had Parkinson's disease, and her health began going downhill. She chose to be cremated. A small service will be scheduled at a later time to scatter her ashes, along with her husband CB's ashes, who passed away December 2015. They had the following five children:

Penny Lee Wolf Almond (1957-?)
Candy Maree Wolf (1958-?)
Charles Bunyun Wolf Jr. (1960-1976)
Clifford Ernest Wolf (1962-1962)
Taffy Jett Wolf (1969-?)

Taffy was adopted at birth. She was the biological child of CB's sister who was struggling with a drug addiction at the time.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, CB Wolf; two sons, Clifford and Charles; a daughter, Candy; a sister, June Fuchs; and a half brother, Paul Johnson.
