Alfred was the son of Jeremiah Vardeman Garrett Sr. and Martha Elizabeth Reynolds Garrett (D.O.D. 1844). He married Sarah Ann Brown on July 4, 1866 in Holt County, Missouri. According to his military pension request papers, they were the parents of 7 children. Three that I am aware of are Mary, W.F. and Alice R.. He was a veteran of the Civil War, serving in the Union Army. He served as a private - 8th Iowa Infantry, Co. F, veteranized 1 Jan 1864 and discharged as a result of wounds suffered in a skirmish at Memphis, Tennessee in August, 1861..
