Richard was born May 7, 1950 to Anthony Sanchez and Adeline (Lovato) Sanchez in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Richard was fond of the outdoor life. He enjoyed camping, fishing and the great outdoors. He also enjoyed sports, namely football. He was an avid fan of the Air Force Falcons and Denver Broncos. He was a member of St. Dominic's Catholic Church where he helped facilitate the Hearts on Fire Prayer Group. He had a heart for children and helping those less fortunate.

He attended Widefield High School and graduated in 1968. He also attended Colorado State University. He served in the United States Air Force for four years from 1968-1972.
