Maria Auguste Homeyer was a daughter of Johann Wilhelm Homeyer and Catharine Homeyer, née Volkmar. She, along with her parents and two siblings, emigrated from Germany to Canada West (now Ontario) sometime between 1859 and 1863.

Maria Auguste and Friedrich Ludwig Walther were married on September 1, 1885, in Berlin (now Kitchener, Ontario). Their children were:
- Frederick William Otto William (1886-1945)
- Augusta Elizabeth Eleanor (1891-?)
