Susan House York, 81, of Anderson passed away Thursday morning, the 26th of November at Rawlins House in Pendleton after a long and valiant struggle with acute cardiac and pulmonary conditions. Susan was born on July 14, 1939 to Marthabelle Goff House and Wilbur Raymond House of Pendleton. She was the first of three children along with Ellen Elaine and Jefferson Perry.
She attended local area public schools and graduated from Pendleton High School in 1957. After high school graduation, she attended Indiana Business College in Anderson and Ball State University in Muncie. Besides working on her parent's farm, Susan was employed at local area Goff Meat Markets and Gates Department Store. She also enjoyed baking and submitting her prepared food items to Madison County and State 4-H Fair competitions along with livestock from her parent's farm. Her apple pie won first place blue ribbon at the Indiana State Fair.
In 1961, she married Jackie Lee York of Anderson and the couple had two sons; Michael Thomas York and Jack Raymond York. While married, Susan was a homemaker and had a part time job as a cafeteria aid at East Side Middle School. The couple divorced in 1976 and then Susan worked for the Anderson Police Department as a dispatcher until 1998. After leaving the Anderson Police Department, she worked as a utilities clerk for Anderson City Utilities to retirement in 2009. Besides working, Susan enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking and doing volunteer work for several local area organizations including Conner Prairie, Special Olympics and 21 Club. In 2006 and 2007, she received awards for her lifelong volunteer work from the Anderson Sertoma Club. She was also involved with the Red Hat Society. Friends and family will remember her affectionate, sociable and warm personality.
Beloved mother, Marthabelle House, father, Wilbur House, sister, Ellen Honnold, brother, Jeff House, and son, Michael York, proceeded her in death.
Survivors include son, Jack Raymond York, niece, Jill Gaffigan, nephews, Scott Honnold and Brad Honnold, and devoted friend, Karen Lumpkin.
A Memorial Visitation will be held Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Home- Lahm Chapel in Pendleton from 11:00 am to 12:45 pm with a graveside service at 1 pm at Grovelawn Cemetery in Pendleton.
