Robert was born at home in the town of Jamestown on Conanicut Island, proud to call himself a true Islander, He attended the Carr and Clark schools before joining his fellow islanders in riding the ferry to Newport to attend high school.
Robert enlisted in the Navy in 1949 serving four years. He then proudly worked on the building of the USS Nautilus, America’s first nuclear submarine. He then worked as a Master Mechanic at International Harvester before moving back to Rhode Island to work at the University of Rhode Island. There he became a Master Locksmith and ultimately became Manager of Housing Maintenance. He retired from there in 1989 to Florida and subsequently settled in Greer SC where he was an active member and “Greeter” in the Grace United Methodist Church on Taylors Rd. in Greer.
Being born on the Island Robert had a deep love for the sea and enjoyed both power and sailboats throughout his life. With his speedboat he taught scores of family, friends and neighbors to waterski. It was common for the family to spend weekends and summer vacations at the beach skiing, sailing and having beach parties. Sailing on Narragansett Bay was his passion. Later he became an avid camper and would travel with Vi all over US seeing America and enjoying the outdoors.
