He was born circa 1852 and enlisted on 28 September 1875 as a private in Company M of the 7th United States Cavalry under Thomas French.

He was in the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Daniel Mahoney was one of the lucky ones who made it back across the river in the retreat and up onto what is now called Reno's Hill where he continued to fight until the end of the engagement.

Married August 8, 1855 to a lady by the name of Mary. Died 7 August 1885 at Barnes Hospital in Washington D. C. of phthisis, pulmonary, diarrhea and exhaustion.
