Bill joined the United States Army in 1967, serving two tours in the Vietnam War and retired after 20 years and 25 days of service as a 1SG on March 31, 1987. During his time in the service, he was stationed in various places, 3 years in West Germany, 2 years in Korea, 2 years in Fort Jackson, SC, 1 year in New Jersey and various times at Fort Polk where he was a drill instructor for many years. While he was stationed at Fort Polk, he met and married the love of his life, Carolyn, on September 22, 1972 and spent 48 wonderful years together. He loved traveling on vacation to see his parents in Marble Falls, TX and loved to go to Branson. In the last few years, they loved visiting the mountains in Maine. When his children moved away, he would load up with his wife and they would go and visit them and loved to visit their grandson who affectionately called him Paw-Paw Chic-Chic. When his grandson was born, he flew in to surprise the family because that was the proudest moment when he became a grandpa. He loved being outdoors, raising chickens and building things with his hands, he was known as a jack-of-all-trades. He had a wonderful sense of humor and had a unique laugh that everyone would know "that was Bill". He was a man of immense faith. In 1987, he received the Holy Ghost, and was delivered from alcohol use. He was baptized by Rev. W. T. Shelton in Lillie Pentecostal Church in the Cottonwood Community where he was a faithful member for 20 years, he was asked to lead in singing, was the church usher and was church sound director. He was a faithful member for the past 10 years at the First United Pentecostal Church in Leesville. He loved reading the bible and listening to God, he was truly a man after Gods own heart.
