Was with the 7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in June 1876. He served as a quartermaster and packer. Was initially some distance away, with the pack train, at the onset of the battle, but ended up on what is known as Reno Hillfighting with what remained of the 7th until General Terry arrived.
