Robert (Bob) Shandera, Sr. passed away peacefully at home with family by his side. He touched many lives with his friendly, outgoing nature and love of life. He had an exceptional personality and left a long lasting impression with all he met.
Robert was born in Crete, Nebraska and served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 – 1964. He landed in Alameda, CA where he started working for Pacific Bell, and met and married the love of his life, Julia. They settled in Martinez, CA where they raised their family.
Robert worked for Pacific Bell for 27 years and retired in 1991. Finding retirement was to slow of a pace, he was contracted back by Pacific Bell as an instructor for new employees.
Robert is survived by his wife, Julia (52 years); his son Robert Jr. and his daughter Natalie and her husband Chris Smith; and grandchildren Rachael and Zachary Smith. He is also survived by his sisters; Nadine (Henry) Bals; Arlene Valenta; Betty Neddenriep, Maxine (Jake) Scherzinger and brother Dennis (Gloria) Shandera. He was preceded in death by his brother Leonard Shandera and parents Mary and Joseph Shandera.
Robert's Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Holy Cross Chapel, 2200 E. 18th Street, Antioch, from 12 noon to 3pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the cancer institute of your choice.
