Terry was born April 10, 1927 in Kansas City, Missouri to the late James and Vera (Turley) Brown. She graduated from Rosedale High School in Kansas City, Kansas, in 1945, where she was a member of the National Thespian Dramatic Honor Society for High Schools and a cheerleader. Terry stayed in touch with her high school friends, known as the Rosedale Roses, throughout her life.

In 1947, she graduated from Kansas City, Kansas, Junior College. There she met her future husband, Everett “Jack” William Terry, a basketball player, who served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They married in 1950 and moved to Colorado in 1954.

After raising her children, Terry had a successful career as a cosmetics industry account manager responsible for a multi-state territory for international brands, including Charles of the Ritz. She was a long-time member of the nonprofit Fashion Group International.
