Carl Thompson of Chelsea, Alabama, passed away at age 78 just twelve days after losing his loving wife Sharon Cornelius Thompson of 51 years. She died on November 15Th, 2020.

With love and admiration, Carl cherished time with his children and grandchildren especially at sporting and school events over the last forty years. Carl had a down-home sense of humor and could tell funny tales upon demand.

Carl retired from Stone Container in Birmingham after several years. During retirement, Carl enjoyed Alabama football games, Atlanta Braves baseball and the all time favorite southern pastime of NASCAR.

Carl attended Phillips High School then served in the U.S. Navy during peacetime aboard the USS Chewaucan - a vital sea going tanker in the Pacific Fleet.

In recent years, Carl and his wife enjoyed traveling to several locations in the USA to reconnect with former shipmates at naval and ship reunions where they recalled memorable events and made new friends.

A long time member of Gardendale First Baptist Church with his wife Sharon Carl was a strong believer in the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

Carl is survived by son Stephen (Renae) Thompson, daughter Meredith (Travis) Long, grandchildren Trent Thompson, Bailey Long, Haley Thompson and Callie Long - along with several cousins, nieces & nephews.

Carl is predeceased by his wife Sharon Thompson (1949-2020), his father Luther Gordon Thompson (1910-1991), his mother Carlene (Reynolds) Thompson (1915-2007) and his brother Gordon Kenneth Thompson (1937-2010).

Pastor Bronson Moore of Church of the Highlands will be officiating private services with burial at Oakwood Memorial Gardens in Gardendale.
