Beverly June Carter was born March 4, 1945 in Blythe, California to Will H. and Carrie Ector. She was the first of seven children as well as the first Ector grandchild. She always had a bubbly, charismatic personality and was known for ‘doing things her way’ and ‘danced to the beat of her own drums’.

Beverly was raised in a home by parents who modeled Christian values, love and discipline. Baptized at an early age, she was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church where she was involved in Sunday School, Baptist Training Union and the Junior Choir. She loved music and singing. Her favorite song was “There Is a Bright Side.” Now she is in heaven singing in the Angelic Choir. She was also a member of the Evergreen Chapter No. 65, Order of the Eastern Star.

Beverly attended local schools and graduated from Palo Verde High School in 1963. Her best memories involved participating in the school chorus, senior play and girl’s athletics. She said the greatest and most significant benefit of her high school years was making and maintaining life-long friendships.

After high school, Beverly worked as a pharmacist’s assistant at the Blythe Drug Store, was a bus driver for the Palo Verde Unified School District and a Head Start teacher. Many of her students remember her warm spirit, compassion and dedication.

Beverly continued her education graduating from Palo Verde College in l966. She married Victor Carter, Sr. and to this union a son, Victor Carter, Jr., was born. He was her pride and joy.

In 1972, she moved to San Diego and attended San Diego State University majoring in Child Development. She later began working at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center as a Senior Administrative Assistant in the Psychiatry Department. While there, she was instrumental in recommending the employment of other African Americans. She was an active Union representative for Local 30 and instituted a yearly African-American themed luncheon celebrating Black History Month. She retired after 40 years.

Soon after moving to San Diego, she joined Calvary Baptist Church. She later united with Bayview Baptist Church where she dedicated several years of faithful service in the music and Women’s ministry and Studies in Christian Living.

Beverly was a selfless and kind-hearted person. She had a charismatic personality and a willingness to help others. Her bright smile made everyone around her feel better.

Beverly loved her family and friends and was the ‘Best Auntie’ ever. She had a very special relationship with her nieces and nephews. Her greatest joy was being ‘Mimi’ to her grandson, Quinn, and granddaughter, Bianca.

Beverly chose Paul Brown as her life partner of 24 years. They shared many good times together. They loved to cook and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Her specialties were making pound cakes, chitterlings, gumbo and pickled pig’s feet. His specialties are macaroni and cheese and potato salad which many of you have enjoyed. Being in their presence made you feel warm and embraced. They never met a stranger. Paul deeply loved Beverly and was her caregiver as her health declined.

Beverly loved to shop, socialize with friends, eat good food, have a nice cocktail, complete crossword puzzles, read romance novels and watch sports. Her favorites were tennis, basketball and being a member of ‘Raider Nation’.

Some of her favorite sayings were, ‘Give me a hug’, ‘Give me a kiss on the clean side’, ‘Hello, Darlin’, ‘Hi, Sweetie’ and ‘Who loves you’.
