Norma Dean Welch, age 92, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2020 in Amarillo, Texas. A graveside service is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 3, 2020 at the Lockney Cemetery. Arrangements are under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Lockney, Texas.
Norma was born May 10, 1928 in the Cedar Hill Community to John and Nancy “Peat” Kelley. She attended the Cedar Hill School until high school when she went to Floydada until she subsequently graduated from Floydada High School in 1944. She married J.A. Welch on April 25, 1953 in Clovis, New Mexico. They began farming and ranching operations at Cedar Hill in 1954. They had one daughter, Connie. Norma was a homemaker and worked with J.A. in managing their farming business operations. She attended both the Assembly of God and the Baptist Churches at Cedar Hill and later the South Plains Baptist Church. She was active in leading one of the local Girl Scout Troops for several years. As a granddaughter of the founding pioneer Fortenberry couple in Floyd County, she was a long-time family historian. She loved genealogy and history and was actively involved with the Floyd County Historical Museum for many years, serving as a volunteer as well as a board member. She also worked on the Floyd County History Book Committee as they researched, prepared and assembled the information published in the History of Floyd County 1876-1979 book. In addition, for years, she worked as a volunteer with the Pioneer Association. Norma and J.A. were honored as the Floyd County Pioneer Couple of the Year at the Old Settler’s Reunion in 2012. Norma enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning or freezing fresh fruits and vegetables, but most of all, making and collecting photographs. She especially loved her family and attending the annual Fortenberry family reunion.
Norma is preceded in death by an infant brother, her parents, and her husband. Also preceding her in death are a sister-in-law, Virginia “Punk” McWilliams and husband Bob, and brother-in-law John B. Pigg.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Connie Pritchett and her husband Steve of Amarillo. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Delores Pigg of Quitaque, brother-in-law Dennis Hartsell and his wife Nancy of Red River, New Mexico as well as nieces and nephews and many cousins.
