I set up this page to note Gertrude and Alfred's Memorial to their daughter :
The South Aisle Window of St Thomas, Bedford.

King David, The Good Shepherd. The Prophet Ezekiel. Inscription: -“This Window is the gift of Alfred Darlington and Gertrude Darlington in memory of their only child, Gertrude Bates Darlington, who entered into rest 24th of January, 1915, aged six years.”

Gertrude Bates Darlington born in Leigh 1908, was the only daughter of Gertrude Bates (daughter of Betty Buckley & James Bates) and Alfred Darlington (son of Thomas and Mary (Hazelden) Darlington) Sadly Gertrude & Alfred never had any other children. I guess they may be buried here also but I cannot find an actual Burial record for Gertrude snr, Gertrude jr or Alfred.

Gertrude and her parents are all recorded on the 1911 Census as living at 45 Platt fold Street, Leigh, Lancashire Alfred Darlington 46 Listed as a Self Actor Minder connected with the Cotton Mills, Wife Gertrude Darlington 42 and Gertrude Bates Darlington 2.

Note: Self Actor Minder Occupation is likely a person who watched and minded the 'Self Acting Mule' - the name of a multi thread spinning machine. The original Mule was hand operated and was invented by Samuel Crompton of Bolton in 1779. It was made self-acting by Richard Roberts in 1830. More Info. - also see Throstle Spinner and Spinner

Sadly St Thomas Church is closed, no longer used for services, merged and renamed St Thomas and All Saints Church on Kenwood Street, Leigh (closer to Leigh Cemetry) An undated anonymous transcript of gravestone inscriptions at St Thomas is appended to the microfilm of the burials register at Leigh Library. At some stage, most of the gravestones were removed from their original positions and located along the side of the current church. There are 242 burial records and the Memorial Inscriptions (MI) recorded from the existing stones and/or the microfilm transcript.

Also mentioned is this extract of an interesting Booklet about the Church "St Thomas Church, Bedford, Centenary, October 12th 1940 a short History of the Church and the Parish compiled by The Rev. G. Willett, MA Vicar of Bedford. Which I found a copy online at the following link (Hopefully still there...when you read this)
