Thomas enlisted as a private for Civil War service in Company I, in the 103rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Granger Twp.(Medina County OH), Aug. 9, 1862, for a term of 3 years. Occupation: Laborer. He was mustered out, May 24, 1865, at Chattanooga, TN by Order of the U.S. War Department.

He was apparently marrried to a first wife named Harriet(born in 1847 in Ohio) as shown in the 160 U.S. Census for Hinckley Twp.(Medina County OH). A second wife, Catharine(born Aug. 1842 in MI), is shown in the 1880 U.S. Census for Brady, Saginaw County MI. Thomas and Catharine had 7 children. Catharine died June 24, 1914 and is buried with Thomas.
