David M. Douglas

Cincinnati – David MacArthur Douglas, age 78, transitioned peacefully on November 24, 2020, surrounded by family.

Born on March 17, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dave grew up in Miamitown as the youngest of two sons of the late Burgess and Thelma Douglas, school teachers originally from Kentucky. Prior to teaching high school history in the Southwest Local School District, Burgess taught in a one-room school in Kentucky. Thelma taught first grade in the Northwest Local School District where many of her grandchildren later attended.

Working at the General Electric (GE) Monsanto plant in 1967 when he was drafted by the Army for the Vietnam War, Dave was originally trained as a field medic and worked on military helicopter pads in Seoul, Korea. After serving in the Army, Dave continued his long career at GE's Evendale plant (now GE Aviation's world headquarters) in 1969 until his retirement in 1997.

Dave was an entrepreneur who ran many businesses while employed at GE. He helped his wife run Douglas's Coffee Shop; sold watches, calculators and other electronics as Douglas Specialties; taught people how to use a computer in the early 1980's; sold used cars that he picked up at auctions and other means; exchanged goods with South Korea; provided landscaping and snow removal services; owned Absolute Services (HVAC); served as a landlord for properties he rented and once ran for public office. Dave not only embraced the entrepreneurial spirit but the intrapreneurial spirit as well by fashioning tools that made it easier to put screws in tight places at GE.

An early adopter of technology, the Douglas household had the first microwave oven on their street. They had two VCRs—one VHS and one Betamax—to ensure they had the correct format when the VCR war was waged and a LaserDisc player which used a disc the size of a vinyl record. Dave put a solar panel on his house in the 1980's to heat water before green tech was a thing.

While the Douglas children enjoyed many pets growing up, Dave developed a deep love for cats later in life including two servals that he traveled to South Dakota to adopt and many lucky strays that he devotedly cared for. In addition to his home in Milford, he had a small farm in Goshen where he raised ducks, chickens and geese.

Dave is survived by his adored wife Jennifer Douglas (nee Lee) and his cherished children Betty Douglas of Cincinnati, Ohio; Marty (Wendy) Douglas of Arlington, Tennessee; Loretta (Roger) Kohrs of Batavia, Ohio and Jason (Freya) Douglas of Cupertino, California as well as fifteen treasured grandchildren Heaven and Keith Douglas in Kentucky; Jerah and Todd Huff, Nikolai Boyce and Rock Kohrs in Ohio; Tiffany, Kassidy and Colby Hager and Sydney and Reese Douglas in Tennessee; Corey Hager in Colorado and Winston, Finn and Lea Douglas in California) and three dearest great-grandchildren (Arawn Brown and Charlie Noel of Kentucky and Safaree Mohammad of Tennessee). He is also survived by his former wife Ruth Mayo (nee Leurck) of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dave was preceded in death by his loving father Burgess and mother Thelma Douglas of Cincinnati, Ohio; dear brother Bob Douglas of Harrison, Ohio; precious infant son Allen Lee Douglas of Hamilton, Ohio and beloved son David Douglas of Sharonville, Ohio.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, December 2, 2020 from 10:00 am with service at 11:00 am at the Spring Grove Funeral Homes, 4389 Spring Grove Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45232 followed by a burial service with military honors at Greenwood Cemetery located at 1602 Greenwood Avenue, Hamilton, Ohio 45011.

Memorial donations may be made in Dave's name to Tabby's Place (tabbysplace.org), a cage-free, no-kill cat sanctuary, and Save the Animals Foundation (staf.org), a no-kill shelter for animals.
