Mary Lera Stein of Mt. Enterprise, Texas gained her Heavenly wings on November 27, 2020. Affectionately known as “Gran”, Mary was a mother and grandmother to far more than “her bunch”. As a result, her legacy of wisdom and life lessons will continue to live in the hearts of many.

Mary Lera Johnson was born on June 30, 1933 to Freeman and Luecendie Hall Johnson in the Concord Community of Rusk County, Texas. She was the third of seven children born to the couple. At a young age, she became a member of Greeley CME Church in the Concord Community and later united with Walnut Grove CME Church in Mt. Enterprise, Texas. At Walnut Grove, she served roles such as church secretary, Sunday school teacher and stewardess. Mary was also a 1952 graduate of Concord High School.

On February 16,1957, Mary joined Titus Stein in holy matrimony. To this union three daughters were born: Belinda Carol, Carla Renee’, and Tanya Patrice. After Titus’s death in 1976, she dedicated her life to the continued building of the legacy that they had set in motion. “God makes no mistakes”, “You learn something new every day”, and “You have to do 110 where others do 100” were her constant reminders of the importance of God’s word and education—both serving as the foundation of the legacy for their family.

Gran also greatly enjoyed supporting her grandchildren in their various activities. She could be found at basketball, football, softball, or baseball games whenever the gym or stadium lights were on. Track meets, cheerleader and dance competitions, band concerts, and One-Act play competitions did not pass her by either. If the grands were involved, then Gran was sure to be there.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Titus Stein, and her parents, Freeman and Luecendie Hall Johnson. She is also preceded in death by her siblings: Willie Bell Johnson Royal, Miles Johnson, John Willie Johnson, Elmer Gene Johnson, Sonny Johnson and Martha Nell Johnson Nichols.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters: Belinda Stein, Carla Stein Johnson and Tanya Stein Hammett; her grandchildren: Sierra LeRae’ Johnson, Alexys Cheyenne Hammett, and Christian Alexander Hammett and great-grandson, Hastin Luke Johnson. She also leaves many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Active pallbearers will be Terry Newman, Jr., Jomine Johnson, D.J. Townsend, Brad Lee, Dhailon Phillips, Sanford Stein and Blake Parham.
