Peggy Marie Cleveland, a beautiful vibrant soul left this earth and gained her new body on November 25, 2020 at the age of 83. She was born in Kemp, Oklahoma to Earl Bodine and Fannie (Turner) Bodine on June 22, 1937. A chapel service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday December 1st at the funeral home with Kirk Cleveland as the officiant. Her final resting place will be the Highland Cemetery in Durant with Michael Cleveland, Christopher Cleveland, Patrick Crouch, Tommy Nix, Hunter Ball, and Tanner Ball as her pallbearers. Her honorary pallbearers will be Brian Ball, Stacy Ball, Carl Ball, Bill Bodine, Phillip Cleveland, and Don Kemp.
Peggy was a “red headed spitfire” who enjoyed life to the fullest. Her dad passed away when she was three years old and she and her brother and sister were raised by her mother Fannie without any family help or government assistance. This is where she learned the value of hard work. She played basketball very competitively at Liberty and Kemp schools. She married Wayne Cleveland in 1955 and they moved to Borger, Texas where he worked in the oil field and where she thought her job was to raise their children (4 boys) and to spend his money. The family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1968 to join Wayne’s brother James and sister in law Peggy in running a very successful restaurant and catering business for over 25 years (Sutphen’s Barbecue). Peggy worked in the kitchen cooking, in the dining room taking care of customers but she was especially good at taking people’s money (at the cash register of course). She and her sister in law (also Peggy Cleveland) kept the books for the business and forged a lifelong friendship. In 1992, Peggy and Wayne moved back to Kemp, Oklahoma where they semi-retired and raised cattle and grandkids. In retirement was where Peggy developed her love of writing. She wrote songs, short books, poems, family genealogy but was most famous for her letters and cards to loved ones where she would give her advice on life. Peggy Cleveland was a strong lifelong believer in Jesus Christ and placed her trust and faith in him.
