James "Jimmy" Bain played as a winger for Chelsea immediately after the Second World War. Jimmy had the distinction of being the first full time professional at Stamford Bridge after WW2.

He played in five of Chelsea's six matches in the 1945-46 FA Cup; the only major competition that took place that season as professional football recommenced after the War. He made his league debut on the opening day of the 1946-47 season, as a crowd in excess of 60,000 saw Chelsea win in their first league match for almost seven years against Bolton Wanderers.

He went on to make a further eight league appearances for the Blues over the course of the season. His only goal for Chelsea came in a First Division match against Brentford, with what turned out to be a crucial goal in a 3-2 win. He left to join Swindon Town the following season, where he would have a successful seven-year career, making over 235 league appearances for the club.
