Jack was a sturdily built left-winger who joined Chelsea from Charlton Athletic in March 1933, where he had won a League Division 3 (South) Championship medal in 1928/29.

Originally with Castleford Town, he had a flair for scoring goals, but he never wholly justified himself at Stamford Bridge and moved to Crystal Palace in the 1937 close season.
