Born in the village of Ash, near Sandwich, Gus was a full back who made five appearances for Chelsea; two in the 1907-08 season and a further three during 1909-10. He had joined from Tottenham Hotspur, initially as an amateur before turning professional in 1907. He remained on the Chelsea books for 6 seasons, making only rare first team appearances.

However Gus was awarded a testimonial in February 1913 as recognition of his loyal service.

He joined Exeter City in the summer of 1913.

He was never a regular first team player at St James' Park, making his debut in a Southern League fixture at St James' Park against Merthyr Town in October 1913.

He only played in one first team game the following season - the first one at home to West Ham United.
Gus was in the team that played Brazil in 1914, as part of the party that toured South America.

Gus died in Portsmouth in 1967.
