A native of Wardley, Gateshead, Ned was one of many of his family to make a career in professional football. His younger brother Sam would play for and captain England, his cousin Billy Felton also played for England, and three other brothers, Tommy, James and Harry, were also professional footballers.

He made one league appearance for Norwich City before moving to Huddersfield Town. He was a member of Huddersfield's back-to-back title-winning side in the mid-1920s and reached the FA Cup final with the club in 1928, though they lost to Blackburn Rovers. Not long afterwards he was signed by new Birmingham manager Leslie Knighton, and would reach a second FA Cup Final 3 years later, though he was again on the losing side; Birmingham losing 2-1 to Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion.
Leslie Knighton moved south to manage Chelsea in 1933, and Ned eventually followed, joining Chelsea in 1937. He appeared regularly during 1938, making his debut on New Years Day against Liverpool, subsequently becoming first choice at right full-back. By now aged 37, he made his last appearance on New Years Eve against Leicester City, and returned to the west Midlands upon the outbreak of the Second World War.

After Chelsea he appeared for local sides during the War years, including a spell as player-manager at Solihull Town. He died in Little Bromwich, Birmingham, at the age of 60.
