Donald “Don” was born August 3, 1930, in Stanley, to Semon and Elsie (Edinger) Walters. His father passed away when he was three and his mother remarried Milfred Halvorson in 1936 and moved to a farm north of Palermo.
He rode horseback to school and would miss several weeks of school each fall to help with harvest. After graduating high school in 1948 (in a class of 4) he attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton. After graduation he worked as an electrician, wiring farms in the Minot area.
He joined the Navy in 1951. With his electrician experience, he did well in electrical construction school and was sent for more training in telephones. After almost two years of training, he was stationed in French Morocco where he stayed until he was discharged in late 1954.
After leaving the Navy, Don moved to Mohall, and worked for Souris River Telephone until his retirement in 1992. He worked through numerous technology transformations during his career and always kept up with things. Even in his last years, he would have his smartphone, download books on his Kindle, be on Facebook and would listen to music he liked on YouTube.
On July 22, 1958, Don married Ruby Enander. They raised three children. He and Ruby were active members of Mohall United Methodist church, and in retirement, they enjoyed traveling to Africa, Asia, South America and the Middle East on Volunteer in Mission and other educational trips through the church and on one their own. Ruby died June 28, 2018.
Don liked airplanes and flew for a short time, and he also liked fishing. His yearly fly-in float plane fishing trips to Northern Ontario with his son, and later grandchildren were also something he really enjoyed.
