Thomas served in the 4th Regiment Texas Mounted, Company A, from August 27, 1861 to June 1865. He fought in the only two Civil War battles in New Mexico, The Battle of Val Verde, in which his horse was killed, and the battle of Glorietta Pass. The defeated Calvary walked back to Caldwell Co., where they were met by a rescue effort consisting of family members that came to save their children, husbands and fathers.

Thomas married Anna E Kirk, Caldwell Co., Texas, 31 May 1867. They had two children together:
Joseph J. Eustace 1868-1869
Betty Eustace 1870 - 1960

On Sep 22 1870, He married Belle M. Kirk. This marriage produced 3 children:
George M Eustace 1871 - 1919
Eudocia Eustace 1873 - 1966
Margaret Eustace 1875 - unk
