BIOGRAPHY:
Mary Permelia Bowden was born 20 August 1855 in Oregon to James Frederick Bowden & Mary Elston Bowden.
At age 17, Mary married William M. A. Simmons (age 34), on January 1, 1874 in the residence of the bride's father, John Bowden, at Rio Seco, (near Chico) Butte County, California.
The couple resided for about 10 years in a cabin located near an old well between Hwy 99E Oroville and Dry Creek Bridge.
Their five children:
Edith Ann b 20Aug1874 at Cherokee Strip/Dry Creek, Butte Co (twin died at birth), d 22Apr1964.
William Louis b 16Jan1876 at Cherokee Strip, d 8Jun 1930.
Frederick Orn b 20Jan1877 at Cherokee Strip, d 6Dec1959.
Jennie Permelia b 7 July 1883 Cherokee Strip, d 23Apr1941.
Charles Franklin b 29Oct1884 in Sutter, d 19Nov1918.
Some time in late 1883 or early 1884, the couple and their four children moved south about 30 miles to Sutter, Ca, a small town just at the south foot of the Sutter Buttes and between the Sacramento and Feather rivers.
Shortly thereafter, Mary became pregnant with their fifth child. On 29 October 1884, their fifth child, Charles Franklin "Frank" was born in Sutter.
Mary Permelia Bowden Simmons passed away, at age 29, on January 9, 1885, 73 days after giving birth to Charles near "Yuba City, Ca." Mary preceded both of her parents and her siblings in death. Perhaps she experienced complications at the time she gave birth to her son and never recovered.
When his wife passed away, William, age 45, was left to care for five children, ages new born, 1 ½, 8, 9 and 10 ½, and operate a farm. At that time, its likely the two youngest children, Jennie & Frank, incapable of helping around the farm, went to live with Grandmother Bowden in Chico.

DIRECTIONS: To find the grave in Section 8, Block B, Lot 73 of the Chico Cemetery, enter the cemetery on its east side off of Mangrove Ave, then around the garden and turn right; proceed approximately 100 yards on the cemetery road and turn left (south). Continue south past the cemetery office and shops, past three right turns to Section 8B "Masonic Pioneer Cemetery." Mary's grave is off on the west side of the cemetery road, in the northwest corner of the Bowden Plot, distinctive by the 8'tall white marble memorial in the center of the plot.

HER PARENTS:
Father: James Frederick Bowden, born in North Molton, Devon, England Sept 10, 1833. James married Mary M. Elston in Lane County, Oregon on 10 Aug 1853. Mother: Mary was born in Pennsylvania August 3, 1836, the daughter of William E. Elston (Mar 31, 1809 – June 3, 1877) and Elizabeth Betsy Sweet (1803 – 1872). William and Elizabeth Elston are buried in Clear Creek Cemetery, off Clark Rd, near Butte College (both are listed in the Butte County Cemetery book 9). James F Bowden naturalized 18 April 1871 in Butte County District Court. The Bowden's had three children: Mary Permelia [Simmons] (20Aug1855-9Jan1885), Melinda Jane [Klepper] (8Sep1858-27Jan1934) and John William (25Dec1865-15April1933). Mary Waite [Holt] lived with the Bowden's as a foster child from birth. About 1880 the Bowden family moved to Chico. James died in Chico on 7 January 1896. Mary died in Chico on 16 September 1916 of cancer of stomach at her home at 1415 Sixth Street following an extended illness. She was a member of the Methodist church.
