Bobby Dean was born to Florence (Austin) Christensen and Lester Odin Christensen on July 31, 1930, in their home in Holstein, Nebraska. He attended schools in Holstein and Roseland and was graduated from Holstein High School in 1948. During high school, he was active on the farm and in 4-H and particularly enjoyed feeding and showing his 4-H calves. He raised and won the Grand Champion steer award for the Adams County Fair for two years in a row.

Following high school, he farmed with his father for three years and then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. After receiving basic and specialized training here in the states, he was transferred to Chateauroux, France where he served the remainder of his time. While in France, he was in charge of 20 airmen and 90 Frenchmen at a supply warehouse. He always used an interpreter since he didn’t speak French. He proudly served his country from 1951-1955.

After returning from France, he attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, majoring in business law and economics. While there he met his future wife, Loy Laurine Oman and they were married in 1956. Their first daughter, Tamara was born in Le Mars. Bob graduated in 1959 and headed back to the family farm to join his father Lester. Soon after he began his career as a loan officer in La Junta, Colorado, eventually moving to Winterset, Iowa, where he continued to work as a loan officer for PCA. While there, he met with a group of guys every morning for coffee and was instrumental in developing the idea for a Covered Bridge Festival with the first event in 1970. His career continued and he became president for PCA in Creston, where the family moved. He finished his business career as the owner and managing broker of Christensen Real Estate and Insurance Company in Creston, retiring in 1998.

While living in Creston, he was an active member of the Kiwanis, Optimist Club, Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church. He always wanted to improve his community.
Bob and Loy loved traveling and enjoyed 16 cruises and a time-share in Mazatlán, Mexico for 19 years. But what was even more important to Bob was to create a warm and loving home. He was always supportive and caring for his family and their home was a hub of activity especially around holidays, a place where everyone always felt welcome.

Bobby Dean Christensen is survived by his wife, Loy, of 64 years; three daughters, Tamara (Steven), Crystal (Bruce) and Debra (John); grandchildren, Courtney (Aaron), Jessica, Curtis (Kassandra), Matthew (Sarah), Isaac (Kayla), Alex (Leslie), Kendra and Kayla; great-grandchildren, Annalise, Katelyn, Amelia and Jason; sister, Lois (Frank); and sister-in-law, Lois.

Bob was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynne; and grandson, David; his parents, Lester and Florence; brothers-in-law, Carroll and Donald Oman; sister-in-law, Kerry Ridge and husband, Al Ridge; and parents-in-law, Ernest and Edith Oman.
