2019. Ellen was born July 24, 1938, in Evanston, Illinois to Carl and Ida Abrahamson. She was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Evanston, where she was baptized into Christ on March 12, 1939.
In the Sunday School at Immanuel, at age 3, Ellen met her first best friend, Nancy Paulson. She started kindergarten in 1943. Three years later, at age 7, she became big sister to Judi. Throughout her school years, she made many friends for life. She graduated high school in 1956, the same year that her family moved to north Evanston. She graduated from Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, where she gained more close friends, particularly among her sorority sisters.
Ellen spent 34 years in the Des Plaines schools-from 1960 until her retirement in 1994-teaching
children in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades, and shaped many young lives. She also dedicated her life to serving others. She and cousin Diane delivered Meals on Wheels in Evanston for 25 years, volunteered with the Greater Chicago Food Depository, and assisted with the Produce Mobile in Evanston that is sponsored by the Food Depository. She was active on Immanuel Lutheran Church's Social Ministry Committee and helped with many projects. She was a dedicated member of Immanuel's Quilting Ministry, piecing hundreds of quilts for refugees around the world. She also volunteered time and talents making knitted caps for The Night Ministry and created beautiful prayer shawls for those who need comfort.
Ellen loved travel. In her youth, most of the travel was to Minnesota to visit family, but in adult years she and her friends and family traveled to many countries around the world. She particularly loved cruises. She and her sister Judi traveled with their mother to Sweden, and on another trip she traveled to Sweden and Norway with Judi and Judi's husband, Tom.
In 2005, Ellen moved from the house in Evanston that had been the family home and went to Glenview, where she lived until her death in a house that she loved.
Ellen was the loving sister of Judi (Tom) Swienton; aunt of Carl (Sarah) Swienton and John Swienton; great aunt of Leah and Eleanor Swienton; and was caring cousin of many. She also leaves many dear friends. While we mourn Ellen's death, we also give thanks for being blessed to know such a caring, kind woman. She will be much missed. Thanks be to God!
