James was a Scottish footballer who played as an inside forward. He was born in Glasgow and began his career at junior club St Roch's before joining Birmingham in 1931, where he failed to make any appearances for the first team.
He moved to Chelsea in 1933 rejoining his old boss Leslie Knighton. A tough forceful inside forward, he was easily identified by his shock of red hair and became an important and regular member of the team up to the outbreak of WW2.
Returning to the staff in 1946, he played one more senior game then moved on to Shrewsbury Town making 125 appearances and scoring 35 goals.
