Agraveside service will be held for Eugene “Gene” Franklin Allen, 95, of Dallas, Texas at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Seagoville, Texas, at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, November 18, 2020 under the direction of Roselawn Funeral Home. Gene passed peacefully at Baylor Hospital in Dallas on November 16, 2020 with his granddaughter Mary L at his side. He was born on August 10, 1925 to Burette Franklin Allen and Constance Fitzgerald Allen. In 1943 during WWII, Gene proudly entered service in the U.S. Navy as radarman 2nd Class on the USS DD508 Cony and is presumably the last surviving member of the assigned WWII duty of that destroyer. During his service, Gene earned 13 major battle stars and was awarded the following: Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and Six Stars, the Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon, and Two Stars. In the 1950s, Gene was recalled serving in Guam with the Seabees during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1953. Gene worked for Western Electric in Dallas prior to his recall to Korea. Following his second tour of duty, he worked for General Telephone & Electronics (GTE) for over 32 years as a switch technician then into first-line management in the payphone division, retiring in 1987. Following his retirement, Gene worked part-time at the State Fair of Texas as Hall State Museum Aide and at the Univ. of Houston – Dallas campus. Gene had a passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He was an artist and was known in the Dallas art circuit for his beautiful landscape oil paintings. He enjoyed race cars and for many years, he served as the racing director at both Thunderbird Speedway in Crandall and the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite – even designing the Devil’s Bowl logo. Gene loved Big Band music and ballroom dancing, hanging out on First Monday in Canton listening to acoustic bluegrass music at the fiddle tent. He was a beekeeper, enjoyed gardening, loved to travel was an avid Dallas Cowboy’s fan. For years, Gene volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America and was recognized for his mentorship with a Lifetime Service Award in 2012. Preceding Gene in death are his parents Burette Franklin Allen and Constance Fitzgerald Allen and his brothers Charles William Franklin and Burt Henry Allen. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Joyce “Jo” Annel Delashaw Allen; children Gail Jean Kilday and her husband Dennis, Eugene Patton Allen and his wife Delene; his brother Jay T. Franklin of Dallas, sister Anita Franklin Carrigan of Corcoran, CA; his grandchildren Mark, Courtney, Mary L, Preston, Zoie, and Lane; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews – all who will greatly miss him.
