Terrible Riot and Bloodshed - Eleven Men Killed and Over Thirty Wounded at Virden. The long looked for battle at Virden, between the wage earning miners on one side and the guards protecting imported negro laborers from Alabama, has been fought and as a result seven men are dead in the little village and a corps of physicians are working over the bodies of nine more who are badly wounded. Edward Welsh, of this city, who is one of the miners killed at Virden yesterday, was 23 years old and is the son of Michael Welsh, residing on Glenwood avenue. He was employed at the Citizens', a shaft west of the city. IL State Register, Springfield, IL 10-13-1898
