FINNEY, David S. (Age 88) Our Dad, David S. Finney, lived a great American life. Born in Spokane on December 9, 1924 to Dr. John M. Finney and Gertrude E. Finney (delivered at home by his father), Dad attended Roosevelt Grade School and graduated from Lewis & Clark High School in January, 1943. He finished a semester early so he could join the war effort in WWII, enlisting in the Navy and serving in the South Pacific until 1946. After his return to Spokane, Dad made, in his words, the best decision of his life and married our Mom, Kay L. Snow in 1948. Dad finished his business degree at Whitworth in 1950, and for the next 40 years he juggled his time and considerable energy between his family (he and Kay had five children), managing a small business, active involvement at church, and enjoying time at his beloved cabin at Spirit Lake. Dad also enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, badminton and power tools of any kind. After his retirement, Dad spent as much time at Spirit Lake as he could and served as an officer of the property owner's association for many years. Several years after Dad's retirement, Kay was diagnosed with dementia and she began a very slow but steady decline. Dad transitioned into caregiver and cook, and gave his best to Mom until the requirements of her care exceeded his ability to meet them two years ago. After a full and active life, Dad needed some care of his own and moved out of the family home in the Valley after 58 years. Dad and Mom have been lifelong followers of Christ, and were active members of Berean Bible Church. On April 18, 2013 Dad made a peaceful transition from this life into the Kingdom of God. David is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Kay Finney; his children, Kate (and Charles) Barker, Judi (and Tom) Blackmon, Dave (and Julie) Finney, Don (and Krista) Finney, and Dan Finney; his grandchildren, Jonathan Barker, Justin Barker, Stephanie Hopkins, Anastasia Finney, Katrina Finney, Trevor Blackmon and Kevin Blackmon; his sister, Ruth Laughlin; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Sunny and Al Gray for their loving and patient care of Dad this last year and to Lene Tsukamato for helping Dad and Mom at home for several years before that. The family suggests memorial gifts to Valley Meals on Wheels who delivered both food and encouragement to Dave and Kay, or to any other worthy organization which would honor our Dad's great American life. A memorial service to celebrate David's life will be held on May 24, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Berean Bible Church, 10910 E. Boone Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99206.
