John Lee Merritt, age 69 of the Thompson Valley community in Tazewell, VA passed away Thursday, November 20, 2020 at his home. Born April 15, 1951 at Bluefield, WV he was a son of the late John Joe Merritt and Frances Margaret Merritt Boardwine He was of the Freewill Baptist faith. Mr. Merritt retired from VDOT after twenty-one years service. He loved his grandchildren, loved building and flying model airplanes, enjoyed watching news – especially Fox News and Fox & Friends. He also enjoyed tinkering with vehicles and was a diesel mechanic while serving in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son , Joshua Daniel Merritt who he dearly missed; sisters, Frances Merritt, Lois McCoy, and Sandra Frank; brothers, Robert, James, and Charles Merritt.
He is survived by his wife of forty-three years, Mary Merritt; daughter, Janie Sutherland and husband, Jamie of Thomasville, NC; sisters, Loretta Lynn Merritt, Linda Wright, and Margaret Merritt; two grandchildren, Hannah Sutherland and Joshua Daniel Merritt, Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Monday, November 23, 2020 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, VA where funeral services will be conducted at 2 PM Tuesday with Pastor Chuck Patterson officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted.
