Rachel Staley Stokes, 99, of Henderson, NC died Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at a local nursing home.

Born in Alamance County, she was the daughter of the late William Alford Staley and Fannie Belle Curtis Staley. She was the widow of Robert Lee Stokes.

Mrs. Stokes was a member of Alamance Lutheran Church until she moved to Henderson in 1947. During this time, she joined First Presbyterian Church of Henderson, NC where she was a member of the Tippet Sunday School Class. Mrs. Stokes was co-owner and operator of the former City Dry Cleaners and City Speed Wash. She was a member of Kerr Lake Saddle Club and Lake Trail Horse Association for 25 years.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, November 22, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., at Elmwood Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Matthew Copple.

Surviving are a daughter, Tempe Stokes Riddle (Tommy); two grandchildren, Thomas Lee Riddle (Tran Tran) and Rachel Elizabeth Riddle and several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Pearl Loy and Lois Butler and three brothers, Rev. Maurice Staley, Dowd Staley and Colin Staley Sr.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the cemetery. All other times, they will be at the home of Tommy and Tempe Riddle.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church P.O. Box 726, Henderson, NC 27536, or to Vance County Animal Shelter 1243 Brodie Road, Henderson, NC 27537.
