Robert George Hess, 83, of Cedar Grove, N.J., passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 19, 2020.

He was the loving husband of Phyllis Hess (nee: Libertell) for 48 years. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Myrtle (nee: Dey) Hess, and sister, Marion Woodworth (the late Jack); and is also survived by his loving daughters, Kristen Hess McFarland (Dr. Daniel C.) and Janine Hess Loconsolo (John P.); four cherished grandchildren, Lena Josephine and Jack Robert Loconsolo and Alexa Phyllis and Eleanor Jeanne McFarland; sister, Bernice Kinniburgh (the late James); brother, Michael Hess (Linda), and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was born and raised in Elizabeth, N.J. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving our country honorably and proudly. Bob worked for many years as a carpenter and millwright and was a proud member of Carpenters Union Local 715 in Elizabeth, for over 50 years. On February 11, 1980, he began his distinguished career at Home Builders Institute as a Building and Apartment Maintenance Instructor at the Edison Job Corps Center. In 1984, he became an HBI National Coordinator for the Northeast Region, placing hundreds of students in rewarding careers in trades that needed and welcomed them. He served as a mentor to his students, and often kept in touch with them years after they completed their training program. He was awarded HBI's "Hands That Work" award in July, 2002 prior to his retirement.
Bob will be remembered by his circle of close friends and colleagues for his loyalty, quick wit, and sense of humor. In retirement he enjoyed fishing, listening to his extensive music collection, reading, and especially spending time with his grandchildren. He was a loving husband and devoted and loyal father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.
Visitation will be on Sunday, November 22, 2020 from 2-6 p.m. at Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, N.J. Services begin on Monday, November 23 at 9 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cedar Grove, with entombment at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J.
