Jane was a daughter of Thomas Neill, a farmer. She married William McDowell (1843-) in County Antrim Ireland 4 June 1867 and 9 days later they sailed to NZ on the 'Blue Jacket' arriving into Lyttelton 30 Aug 1867. They had a son (or 2) in Dunedin and later moved to the North Island, settling in Thames, Coromandel, where William had hotels/restaurants.

NEGLECTED CHILDREN, Harry, Edith and Nathan McDowell, aged respectively 7, 5 and 3, were charged with being destitute children, within the meaning of the Act. - Mr Pardy said the mother of these unfortunate children had told a pitiful tale at the station about them. He advised her to make her statement to the Court - she was not present however and the case was withdrawn.
