Emily Ann Howell was truly a gift from God. Born Jan. 22, 2007, at 8:15 p.m. to her birth mother Maria Raposo, Emily knew she had a lot of joy to share.

From the moment of conception, her birth mother knew her child would be a true blessing. Knowing she would not be able to care for her own child without assistance, Maria looked into an open adoption. With the help of a loving relative, Lola Fitzpatrick, she was introduced to Mark and Elayne Howell. They were so excited when two months before Emily's birth they would soon be the parents of a child they had so awaited.

Maria, Mark, and Elayne looked forward to each weekly doctor visit. Ultrasound pictures of their little child would hide her gender until birth. When their baby arrived, she was given the name Emily Ann. Unknown to the adoptive parents at the time, Emily had been Maria's grandmother's name.

Weighing in at five pounds, nine ounces, Emily wasted no time in getting to know both sides of the families and friends. Her smiles showed she enjoyed being cradled in the loving arms of both parents. Mark and Elayne soon discovered the joys of parenthood and relished each and every moment with their new daughter.

They shared many precious stories with her about what life would be like at the Howell Ranch in Starr Valley, Nev. After her short stay in the hospital, she visited the preschool where Maria taught. Her eyes were bright with excitement in seeing some things she could do when she grew up.

Her greatest time shared was when she stayed with her new parents at Grandpa and Grandma Mussmann's house in Eden. There she got to see the sights and sounds of ranching and the fellowship of friends and family. Her dreams were always filled with the love her family was giving her. In just 10 short days her life became complete knowing her birth mother gave Mark and Elayne the greatest gift they will hold forever in their hearts, the joy of parenthood.

It was a true privilege that God allowed Emily to touch so many lives. She is now back in the loving arms of Jesus surrounded by many loving family members.

Emily is survived by her parents, Mark and Elayne Howell of Starr Valley, Nev.; birth mother, Maria Raposo of Twin Falls, Idaho; grandparents, Berwyn and Millie Mussmann of Eden, Idaho; grandparents, Fred and Mary Howell of Starr Valley, Nev.; and grandparent, Dinis Raposo of Chino, Calif.; and numerous cousins, aunts and uncles.

Mark, Elayne, and Maria would like to thank St. Luke's Magic Valley Regional Medical Center's nursing and neonatal staff, Dr. Astin, Dr. Jones and attorney, Bart Browning.

Services for Emily were held Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Eden with Pastor Don Adolf and Pastor Wesley Johnson of the Valley Christian Center officiating. Burial followed at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Eden.
