Robert Dwinell (Bob) Ladd of Bellevue passed away at age 97 on January 23, 2016. He was born on December 16, 1918 in Lyndonville, Vermont, son of Roger B. Ladd and Maude Dwinell Ladd. The family moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts when Bob was about nine years old and he became an Eagle Scout and president of his class at Greenfield High School. Bob graduated Duke University in 1941 and began a career that was soon interrupted by the outbreak of World War II.

After training as a U.S. Navy officer, Bob married Virginia (Ginny) Dole, a fellow Greenfield High School graduate, and they moved to San Diego, California, where Bob became the communications officer for a Landing Ship Group. He participated in the first wave on shore at eight major landings in the Pacific and was awarded a Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters for bravery in battle.

After the war, Bob joined the Boston office of Plymouth Cordage Co., which transferred him to Seattle in 1949 to serve its largest customer, Pacific Marine Supply Co. In 1951 he transferred to San Francisco to be West Coast manager, but in 1953 he was lured back to Seattle to become president of PMS, and took up residence in Bellevue.

Bob was very active in the Seattle community. He was particularly active in Rotary, serving as President of the Rotary Club of Seattle, as a Rotary District Governor, and as chair of several Rotary International committees, and he attended 17 Rotary International conventions. As a result of his devotion, he became known as "Mr. Rotary" in the Seattle club. He also was 1961 Seafair Prime Minister, President of Northwest Marine Trade Association, President of the Propeller Club, Maritime Man of the Year, a 40-year Salvation Army advisory board member, and a board member of the Washington Athletic Club, Japan-America Society, and Bellevue Community College Foundation, among others.

Bob and Ginny were married for 65 years until her death in 2007. He will be missed by their four children and their spouses, Jim & Sherry Ladd of Bellevue, David and Patty Ladd of Gig Harbor, Sandy and Tim Smithers of Elk Grove, California, and Linda and Paul Anderson of Aiken, South Carolina, as well as their 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church

of Bellevue (752 108th Ave. NE)

at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 20, 2016. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Seattle Rotary Service Foundation (1215 Fourth Ave., Ste. 1215, Seattle, WA 98161) or the Salvation Army (P.O. Box 9219, Seattle, WA 98109).
