Robert Barkley was the son of Henry Barkley and Mary Knox. He was a Revolutionary War patriot and according to his widow's pension application (http://southerncampaign.org/pen/w17252.pdf) he served in several tours against the Tories. Among the battles he fought in were the Battle of Ramsour's Mill and the Battle of King's Mountain (The Patriots at King's Mountain by B.G. Moss).
