JOSEPH ELOI MAJOR submitted by Clifford and Eva Major Joseph Eloi Major, commonly known as "Pierre", was born at St. Phillips, Province of Quebec on February 12, 1842. His wife, Eveline Berschie, of St. Hyacinthe, R0, was born about 1860. They came to Manitoba in 1889 accompanied by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maxium Major, a sister, Margaret, and an uncle, Duff. Also accompanying them were their eight children: Mary, Joseph, Arthur, William, Alf, Laurie, Anna and Ida. Pierre's parents passed away in the early 1900's and are buried in the St. Daniel Cemetery. Pierre and Eveline came to Manitoba on the advice of his brother, Dawson, who wrote telling them to come, that the soil was good. Their trip was made by Red River can from Winnipeg. They lived on NE 33-6-4w. near the Boyne River, for a time. Their older children attended the first Boyne 10g school. They moved to Fannystelle and then to St. Daniel to NE 24-7-6w. Three children were born here: Rita, Newton and Lydia. In 1927 they moved to Haywood, and later to Carman. Mrs. Major passed away at the age of eighty-two in 1942. She had suffered for many years with rheumatism which she contracted when she tried to save her turkeys from a big flood. Pierre lived to the age of 109 years. When at the age of eighty-eight years he could pitch sheaves with the best of them. At 108 he could still cut a mighty sharp caper when it came to step dancing. Later, most of his moves were confined to a checker board. Pierre passed away on June 28, 1951. Mr. and Mrs. Major are interred in Greenwood cemetery, Carman.
