U.S. Veteran
Danny Mack Martin, 72, of Pampa passed away on November 18, 2020 in Pampa.
Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Briarwood Church with Ricky Martin, Danny’s nephew, and Brother Paul Nachtigall, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. The service will be live streamed on the funeral home website.
Danny was born May 25, 1948 in Pampa to Alvin and Naomi Martin. He graduated from Pampa High School in 1968. Danny was drafted into the United States Army in 1969 and served in the jungles of Vietnam until 1970 and reenlisted as a helicopter mechanic until 1972. After he returned to Pampa, he began a career with the City of Pampa as a firefighter for several years. Danny later went to work for Cabot Corporation oil/gas division in 1978, retiring in August of 2010 after 32 years. Danny married Nelda Molberg on February 8, 1983 in Miami. He joined the VFW Post #1657 in January 2003 and was a life member. Danny served as commander of the post from 2003 until 2019, District 9 Commander in 2004, 2010, 2012, 2013, and 2016. He also was an All-American Post Commander and All- American District Commander in 2013. He was awarded the National Aid to Camp award and served as VA VS rep for several years. Danny has a brick laid in his honor at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial in Angel Fire in 2013 and also has a plaque at the Texas Panhandle War Memorial in Amarillo. In 2015 he was honored as The Community Builder for the Top O’ Texas Masonic Lodge #1381. He was inducted into the Hall of Honor at the Freedom Museum in 2018.
Over the years Danny coached little league football and was a huge Pampa Harvester fan of all sports. He started a boxing club for young men to learn to box, and even had a boxing match against the sheriff for a community fund raiser. He was a true American solder that loved his country and his comrades. While he was commander of the post, he and his post were able to help numerous families during difficult times, and he was instrumental in bringing the traveling Vietnam Wall Memorial to Pampa. Danny loved to help others and anyone in need.
His hobbies included operating remote-control airplanes, slot cars, rodeos, rooster fighting, coon hunting, camping, boating, and fishing. He was a gun and knife enthusiast. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominoes. His family was important to him and he was so proud of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Virginia Mae Romines; a brother, Harold Loyd Martin; and Chunga.
Survivors include his wife, Nelda of the home; 2 beautiful daughters, Pamela Kay Martin and Angela Faye Martin both of Pampa; 6 grandson, Roper Don Barr and wife Courtney of Royse City, RoDee Mack Barr and wife Elena of Dumas, Brendan Paul Givens of Amarillo, Aidon Luke Fennell of Amarillo, Clyfton Zane Fennell of Pampa, and Rylan Hathcoat of Pampa; 2 great granddaughters, Memphis Wells Barr and Isla Marie Barr; a brother, Joe David Martin and wife Peggy of Pampa; a sister, Patricia Ann Maddox and husband Bill of Pampa; numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
