Mary Ann Hudson married Alfred Charles Hanlon on 20 Jun 1894 at St. Paul's Church, Dunedin, officiated by Rev. Mr. Melville. She lived her whole life in Otago and was a prominent figure in the social life of Dunedin. Already noted in society as the daughter of a prominent townsman, it was as Alfred's wife that she gained the most newspaper column inches. This was initially for his stellar legal career, but later more often related to his many sporting club memberships - in many cases presidentships - and philanthropic work which she supported wholeheartedly. They had four children: Jack (1895-1962), Doreen (1901-1977), Eileen (1910-1968) and Patricia Hanlon (1912-1972).
Mary Ann Hanlon died 23 Jan 1940, aged 69, survived by Alfred. She was buried the next day in Andersons Bay Cemetery, (block 152, plot 89), later joined by husband Alf and eventually also a granddaughter, Lenore Harty (as Lenore's father and mother were buried together in a military grave).
