US Congressman. He was elected as a Whig to represent Pennsylvania's 1st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1843 to 1845, then was elected as a Republican to represent the 2nd Congressional District, serving from 1857 to 1861. He resigned in Congressional seat on June 8, 1861 (after the firing on Fort Sumter) to serve as United States Minister to Turkey. He served at that post from 1861 to 1870.
