A promising career cut short.
Lee County Sheriff's Deputy Scott E. Wheeler, 24, died Wednesday, after authorities said he collided with another car while driving a motorcycle in Cape Coral.
He was off duty.
"It's a sad day," said Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott on Thursday afternoon. "We lost a member of our family."
Scott ? who was at the scene Wednesday evening ? said he delivered the news to Wheeler's mother himself.
"It's a tough message to deliver, but it's much harder to receive," Scott said adding that the deputy's mother was devastated by the news.
According to Cape Coral Police reports, Fort Myers resident Patrick S. McKart, 20, was driving a 2002 Mitsubishi Diamante west on Pine Island Road, approaching the intersection of Skyline Boulevard just before 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.
At the same time Wheeler was driving his 2009 Yamaha motorcycle east on Pine Island Road in the inside lane.
Several witnesses said Wheeler was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to reports.
As the motorcycle approached Skyline Boulevard, McKart turned south and into the right of way of Wheeler, who tried to stop by skidding, witnesses told police.
The motorcycle could not stop and struck the passenger side of McKart's car, causing the car to spin clockwise until it stopped in the median of Skyline. Wheeler was ejected from his motorcycle.
Wheeler was declared dead at the scene, while reports said McKart was not injured.
Cape Coral police said no alcohol or drugs were involved in the crash.
Wheeler was three years into his career with LCSO, and served as a corrections deputy.
"By all measures a good deputy, a good officer," Scott said of Wheeler.
In addition to his mother and father, Wheeler is survived by his two children and fiancée, who is pregnant with the couple's third child.
Scott said the family is working out details for services.
Nevertheless, Scott said the Lee County Sheriff's Office would be there for Wheeler's family during this difficult time.
"The Sheriff's Office plans to assist them in any way we can," Scott said.
