Major League Baseball Player. For twenty-one seasons (1955 to 1975), he was a pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals. Born Lyndall Dale McDaniel, he made his initial impact on the baseball diamond during his years at Arnett High School in Oklahoma. He enrolled at the University of Oklahoma on a basketball scholarship, prior to being signed as an amateur free agent (bonus baby) by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1955. He made his Major League debut on September 2, 1955 and pitched in four games that season. By the 1957 season, he was a part of the Cardinals' starting rotation which included Larry Jackson, Sam 'Toothpick' Jones and his brother Von McDaniel. However, within one year, he was moved to the role of reliever and would go on to pitch out of the bullpen for the majority of his career. During the course of his career, he led the National League in saves three-times and distinguished himself when he achieved all star status. In 987 career regular season games, he compiled a 141 win, 119 loss record, with a lifetime 3.45 ERA, in 2,139 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he became a minister. He died of complications from the Coronavirus.
